Overview

The Assessing Competence course covers best practices for designing and facilitating assessments, including knowledge-based assessments and performance tests. It also explores practical techniques for evaluating training effectiveness and maintaining training records.

This course forms part of the Certificate in Train the Trainer, which covers the key pillars of workplace training – from identifying training needs, to training design and delivery, and assessment and evaluation.

Competencies Obtained

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of assessing competence in workplace training.
  • Identify a range of assessment tools and determine when each is most appropriate.
  • Describe the process of planning, designing, trialling, and finalizing assessment tools.
  • Define the principles of reliability and validity, and explain how they are both important for ensuring fair and consistent assessment outcomes.
  • Explain how to evaluate training effectiveness using Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Evaluation.
  • Explain the importance of maintaining accurate training and assessment records and describe appropriate methods for doing so.

2. Best Practices for Assessments

  • Designing valid and reliable assessments.
  • Ensuring assessments are balanced, accessible, and practical.

3. Oral and Written Assessments

  • Common question types and when they’re most effective.
  • Effectively assessing different levels of learning (Bloom’s Taxonomy).
  • Pitfalls to avoid when writing assessment questions.

4. Performance Tests

  • On-the-job observations vs. simulated assessments.
  • The importance of observation checklists and qualified assessors.

5. Evaluating the Effectiveness of Training

  • Why it’s important to evaluate your training.
  • Tried-and-tested methods for effectively evaluating training effectiveness and demonstrating return on investment.

6. Training Record Keeping

  • What records you need to keep, why it matters, and methods for doing so.

Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment. Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion for the course.
