Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) 7.5 – Passenger Handling

Competencies Obtained

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

• Become familiar with the legal requirements for dangerous goods, restrictions, proper handling and storage, labelling, marking and documentation rules.
• Understand that some items may endanger the safety of the aircraft or persons board, and the carriage of these dangerous goods by air may be either prohibited or restricted.
• Identify hidden dangerous goods in cargo, mail, and passenger baggage.
• Understand, explain, and apply the basic procedures in the event of an incident or emergency involving dangerous goods.

Who Should Enrol?

Those involved in the transport of dangerous goods by air must complete training and assessment based on the function(s) they perform every 2 years. 

This course is designed for persons responsible for accepting passenger and crew baggage, managing aircraft boarding areas, and other tasks involving direct passenger contact at an airport (Function 7.5 – previously CAT 9). 

This may include airline, airport, and ground handling personnel responsible for passenger processing.

• The CBTA based training model.
• Dangerous goods regulations.
• The hazards and risks of dangerous goods. 
• Permitted vs. forbidden dangerous goods. 

2. Hidden Dangerous Goods

• How to identify non-declared dangerous goods. 
• Examples of hidden dangerous goods. 

3. Dangerous Goods Carried by Passengers and Crew

• Dangerous goods allowed to be carried by passengers and crew. 
• Using IATA DGR Table 2.3.A.

4. Roles and Responsibilities

• Airline and shipper’s responsibilities.
• State and operator variations. 
• Information at cargo acceptance areas, to passengers, and for operator’s employees. 
• Dangerous goods security. 

5. Classification and Packaging

• The 9 classes of dangerous goods. 
• Shipments with multiple hazards. 
• What are packing groups?

6. Batteries

• Key considerations and requirements for the transport of:
• Lithium batteries.
• Sodium ion batteries.

7. Marking and Documentation

• Key markings and labels.
• Overpack. 
• Shippers declaration for dangerous goods. 
• The Air Waybill (AWB).

8. Baggage Operations

• How to identify forbidden dangerous goods. 
• Dangerous goods in baggage. 

9. Emergency Procedures

• What is an accident?
• Reporting obligations and processes. 
• Responding to and reporting an emergency situation. 
• Identifying dangerous goods. 
• What to do if you come into contact with dangerous goods.

Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment. Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.
