The Developing Training course will guide you through the key items to consider when designing training, helping you create training that meets its goals and delivers real value for your learners.

You’ll learn how to structure training programs, select the best training method(s), define clear objectives, and transform these objectives into practical and engaging training materials that make a lasting impact.

This course forms part of the Certificate in Train the Trainer, which covers the key pillars of workplace training – from identifying training needs, to training design and delivery, and assessment and evaluation.

Competencies Obtained

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of using a training needs analysis (TNA) to design a focused training program.
  • More effectively select and justify the best training delivery method(s).
  • Write clear, measurable learning objectives.
  • Better design valid, reliable assessments aligned to the training’s learning objectives.
  • Create or source more engaging, well-structured training materials.
  • Apply active learning to boost engagement and retention.
  • Explain how to plan and run an effective pilot and use the feedback gained to improve the quality of your training.

This course covers the following topics:

1. Designing the Training Program

  • Translating TNA findings into a structured program design.
  • Ensuring your training meets learner and business needs.

2. Choosing the Right Training Method(s)

  • The strengths and limitations of different training delivery methods.
  • Identifying the most appropriate method(s) for your context.

3. Defining Learning Objectives

  • What are learning objectives and why are they so important?
  • Characteristics of good learning objectives.

4. Designing Assessments

  • Types of assessments and when to use them.
  • Introduction to designing valid, reliable, and useful assessments.

5. Writing or Sourcing the Course Content

  • How to select, structure, and create the required training materials.
  • Best practice features for training materials (e.g., presentation materials, videos, etc.)
  • Creating inhouse vs. outsourcing the training design.

6. Developing Engaging Training

  • How adults learn – and how to design your training accordingly.
  • Designing training that promotes active learning and retention.
  • Getting the timing and pacing right.

7. Piloting and Refining

  • Why it’s so important to pilot your training, and how to run an effective pilot.

Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment. Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion for the course.
