Overview
The Emergency Preparedness and Contingency Planning course has been designed to provide a set of guidelines for emergency preparedness and contingency planning for airport operators.

The course provides guidance on current industry best practices within the framework of the Aerodrome Emergency Plan (AEP).

Learning Objectives

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the relevant ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices related to emergency preparedness and response.
  • Produce better and more appropriate Aerodrome Emergency Plans (AEP) that:
    • Take into account a wide range of possible events.
    • Enable the airport to return to normal operations as soon as possible.
    • Allow for effective coordination with the various agencies involved in the emergency response.
  • Recognize the importance of training, testing, exercises and documentation in ensuring an effective emergency response.

  • The characteristics of aerodrome emergencies.
  • Aerodrome Emergency Plans (AEP).
  • Business Continuity Planning (BCP).
  • Vulnerability Plans and Assessments.
  • Returning aerodrome operations to normal after an emergency.

Emergency Planning Phase

  • Key items that should be considered in an AEP.
  • Measures to be followed in an emergency response.
  • Tool and supplies involved in emergency preparedness and response.
  • Adopting a risk management approach.

AEP Agencies and Their Roles

  • The agencies that should be included in an emergency response.
  • The roles and responsibilities of agencies participating in an emergency response.
  • The importance of a coordinated response.

Types of Emergencies

  • The various emergency situations aerodromes may face and that should be accounted for when developing the AEP.
  • Key considerations for the different types of emergencies.

Key Considerations in Emergency Response

  • The elements of effective emergency response.
  • Emergency response initiation procedures.
  • Managing closures and emergencies involving difficult terrain or water rescue.
  • Preservation of evidence.

Communication and Provision of Assistance

  • Media communication and handling.
  • Providing effective assistance to those involved in, or impacted by, an emergency.

Training, Testing and Documentation

  • The importance of training in implementing the AEP.
  • Different training programs for developing emergency response skills.

Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment.

Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.
