Overview

The Runways and Taxiways Visual Aids course explores the visual aids commonly found on airport runways and taxiways.

It will equip you with the knowledge to identify and accurately interpret the critical markings, signs, lighting, and other aids you may encounter.

The knowledge gained from this course is essential to safe manoeuvring on the airside.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain how visual aids contribute to airside safety in normal and low visibility conditions.
  • Identify and accurately interpret the meaning of key runway and taxiway:
    • Markings
    • Signs
    • Lighting
    • Markers
  • Recognize the markings, signs, lighting, and other aids used to identify unserviceable areas, works areas, and obstructions.
  • Understand your responsibilities when it comes to visual aids.

  • All airport, airport stakeholder, and service provider personnel who are required to operate on the airside.
  • Airport managers, supervisors, or team members with operations or safety responsibilities.
  • Personnel responsible for training and facilitating airside operational staff.

The Runways and Taxiways Visual Aids course covers the following topics:

  • The complex airside environment at airports.
  • The importance of visual aids in enabling safe and efficient operations.
  • Key ICAO and ACI guidance material / reference documents.
  1. Runway Markings
  • What the different markings on runways look like and the purpose each serves.
  1. Taxiway Markings
  • The different types of taxiways found at airports.
  • The markings found on airport taxiways and their purpose.
  1. Signs
  • Key signs found on runways and taxiways and how they aid the safe and efficient manoeuvring of aircraft and vehicles.
  1. Lighting
  • The different lights found on runways and taxiways and the purpose each serves.
  • New technologies being implemented at airports.
  1. Airside Roads
  • Markings, signs, and lights found on airside roads and at the intersection of airside roads with runways and taxiways.
  1. Other Visual Aids
  • Key markers commonly found on runways and taxiways.
  • The visual aids used to identify unserviceable areas, restricted use areas, and obstructions.
  • Other visual aids commonly found at airports (e.g., windsocks, ATC light signals)
  1. Closing Thoughts
  • Your responsibilities when it comes to visual aids, including the importance of familiarizing yourself with the specific visual aids used at your airport.

Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment. Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.
